The moment you sell your company to PE and stop making the decisions, it's no longer your call. Shouldn't come as a surprise. There are other ways to structure a deal to give the owners and the staff what they want. Otherwise, you get the cash and the buyer gets the say.
My friend’s dad built a business from nothing. 30 years. Blood and sweat. Turned it into something worth $2,000,000.
Sold it in 2019 to a private equity firm.
They gutted it in 18 months. Cut 40 jobs. Raised prices 35%. Eliminated the pension plan he’d built for his employees. Squeezed every dollar out and sold the carcass.
He calls it the worst decision he ever made. Said he thought they’d protect what he built.
Private equity doesn’t buy businesses to run them. They buy them to harvest them. And they’re doing it to every industry you depend on daily.
