Do you even WANT to stick around after you exit as the owner?
Because some people do – and they have their reasons.
Others don’t. They want to run for the hills the moment the transaction closes.
That’s fine, but it should feed into your exit strategy and dictate the type of exit you go after.
Just don’t think you can have your cake and eat it.
If you have zero operational or strategic involvement in your business and it runs like clockwork without you – then you might get away with a shorter transition, depending on who is acquiring you.
But be realistic. When we’re looking at acquisition opportunities, we don’t want to become owner operators.
But it’s more than that. Some owners are happy to work with new owners for a couple of years. Why? Because they will breathe new life into the business – and if the deal is structured properly – receive an even better financial outcome.
There’s no right or wrong. It depends on you and the path you choose in advance of your exit.
