2024 was a much better year for buying and selling companies.

The value of mergers and acquisitions in 2024 involving UK companies was up 36 per cent, standing at about £250 billion.

I often think the media focuses too much on the mega-deals - like the £5.4 billion acquistion of Hargreaves Lansdown by private equity giant CVC.

But the SME market has also improved this year, as more business owners have sought an optimised exit and a way to derisk their financial position.

And 2025 looks set to be another busy year, partly driven by tax changes related to operating and disposing of businesses.
