Is the Jeff Bezos “2 pizza rule” already out of date?
You probably know his rule centred on having small teams that can be fed with just 2 pizzas.
Why? The idea was that the smaller the team, the better the collaboration.
But sustaining high levels of collaboration remotely can be hard work. How do you bring the spirit of the 2 pizza rule into virtual and hybrid teams?
Overcommunicate → Without being face-to-face, it’s harder to read engagement and understanding levels. Start sharing and listening more. Proactively ask for feedback and input.
Socialise together → Harder when teams are dispersed acoss the globe. But finding ways to connect on a human level (whether that’s once a month, once a quater or virtually) builds social capital and creates deeper levels of collaboration.
Non-conformity. You often see a kind of artifical team consensus, when it’s online. Members of that team are worries that disagreements will be distorted and comes across as rude or hostile. Encouraging healthy, contrarian thinking creates the expectation that views will be challenged, in order to get the best outcome.
What else would you add to promoting team collaboration in a hybrid environment?
