I’ve seen this go spectacularly wrong..
Yes, franchising your business can be a great way to expand rapidly and open new doors.
But it is not a decision to take lightly.
It takes dedication and a lot of hard work to make it a success, so here are a few things to think about before making your decision…
1. Business Scalability. Figure out whether your business can be easily replicated. Franchise success relies on a proven system that can be duplicated across multiple locations. If your business relies heavily on unique factors, a franchise model might not be the best choice.
2. Standardisation & Consistency. Can you create a comprehensive operations manual? Franchisees need clear guidelines and standardised procedures to ensure consistent quality. If your business model can be broken down into a step-by-step process, you’re on the right track. But also remember that you might need to enforce this process.
3. Strong Branding. Franchising is all about leveraging a strong brand. Ensure you have a powerful and recognisable brand identity that appeals to both franchisees and customers. Your marketing strategy should be adaptable to different markets.
4. Management Skills. Are you ready to shift from being an operator to a coach and mentor? As a franchisor, your role will change from running your business to supporting franchisees. You will need first-class management skills and a strong team to support your franchisees.
5. Financial Viability. Before franchising, get serious with the analysis. Make sure the model is profitable for both you and potential franchisees. Have a solid financial plan that covers initial fees, ongoing royalties, and advertising costs.
The franchise model isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution and it doesn’t work for every type of business. Take time to weigh the pros and cons – and I’d recommend you consult with people who’ve done this already, before making your decision…
