Not having an exit strategy is pretty short-sighted in my opinion.
Why? Because the people who work in your business will suffer the most, when unexpected events force an abrupt exit – or introduce uncertainty about succession.
Having a clear strategy about scaling up your business – and how you will evolve your own role over time – means that you stay in control of events. And of course, you get to secure your own financial future.
But perhaps the most important reason for having an exit strategy often gets completely missed by many business owners.
It’s actually about maximising your business value. Knowing what really moves the needle on what your business is worth. Because if you know that, it affects the decisions you make every day about your business.
An exit strategy is not so much about preparing to leave the business – it’s more about building a highly valuable business, no matter what the future holds.
